A vacuum gauge is an instrument for measuring the pressure of gases or vapours below atmospheric pressure. Absolute vacuum gauges calculate pressure directly from a measured physical quantity, whereas relative vacuum gauges require calibration against an absolute standard.
The relationship between a physical phenomenon and pressure is most pronounced within a specific range, known as the gauge's "measurement range." Covering approximately 19 orders of magnitude (from 10⁵ down to 10⁻¹⁴ Pa) requires multiple gauge types, each optimized for a specific region. This necessity can lead to measurement uncertainties at the overlapping boundaries between different technologies.
