An ideal dielectric is non-conductive, serving as an electrical insulator. This property stems from the tight binding of positive and negative charges within its atoms or molecules, which prevents the generation of significant numbers of free-moving charges (like electrons) under normal conditions. The faint conductivity observed in practical dielectrics arises from various mechanisms, including impurity defects, bulk conduction, and surface conduction. The detailed study of these mechanisms falls within the domain of dielectric physics. From an applied engineering perspective, this minor conductivity is often macroscopically characterized as leakage current loss.
